Our story

Located between Peach Creek and Baughman Slough in Wharton County, Texas, Jefferson is home to descendants of Susan Freeman Jones Jefferson who was born in 1862 in Louisiana and migrated to Wharton in 1865. This one story facility offers a unique location for a variety of events.

Areas available for lease include the Great Room, Grotto Bar, Banquet Hall, Main Kitchen, Catering Kitchen, Library, Hair Salon, Chapel, three Guest Suites, Pavilion, and Poolside. A gallery of artwork enriches the beauty of the facility.

The edifice sits on 15 landscaped acres of manicured lawn, pecan and indigenous trees, tapered and box shrubs, a front pond with fountain, a back pond stocked with fish, and a dry creek bed. A helicopter pad on the property creates convenient transportation from the Houston airports or as an impressive arrival and/or departure for special occasions.

THE GENESIS AT JEFFERSON

Susan Freeman was born a slave in June of 1862 in Louisiana. Widowed early as Charles Jones’ wife, she married James Jefferson in 1887 and together they purchased a tract of land "that certain tract or parcel of land... being part of the Martin Allen League situated on the West Bank of Peach Creek in Wharton County, Texas " and the family farmed and lived on the property from that time.

In 1999, Reginald Van Lee, a great grandson of these former slaves, began the nine year process of reclaiming all the original acres to build a family retreat. A groundbreaking and consecration of the land took place in 2008 and November 17, 2012, marked the unveiling of “Jefferson at Peach Creek,” designed by Houston architectural firm Sullivan, Stevens, Henry, Oggero Associates in the Frank Lloyd Wright style. This family compound/retreat, adorned with Christopher Guy and Gianni Versace furnishings and elegant appointments, is available as a special “getaway” from urban living for corporate and social events by the descendants of the family matriarch Susan Freeman Jones Jefferson.
